Former Awutu Senya East MP and prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hawa Koomson, is reportedly in critical condition after being brutally assaulted during the parliamentary election rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
According to Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a former Presidential Staffer under the Akufo-Addo administration, the former lawmaker is "fighting for her life" in hospital following the violent incident. Aboagye made the revelation while addressing journalists at the scene of the chaos.
“Our people are being attacked. As we speak, Hawa Koomson is currently fighting for her life in a hospital,” he said, calling the situation alarming and unacceptable.
The chaos erupted at the Odorkor Methodist 1 Polling Station, one of 19 locations selected for the partial rerun to determine the final outcome of the Ablekuma North parliamentary race. The rerun became necessary due to a disputed December 2024 general election result that left the seat unoccupied for over seven months.
Eyewitnesses reported that a group of unknown thugs arrived at the polling station in a pickup vehicle and forcefully stormed the premises, despite heavy police presence. The assailants proceeded to assault several individuals, including Hawa Koomson, who was reportedly kicked in the groin and continued to be beaten while on the ground.
A JoyNews journalist attempting to capture the incident on video was also assaulted, alongside other individuals at the scene. The police, although present in significant numbers, failed to prevent the attack or contain the chaos immediately.
Aboagye called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take urgent and decisive steps to restore order and ensure the safety of all electoral participants. “Our people’s lives are at stake. The IGP must act now to cease the violence and bring the perpetrators to justice,” he stressed.
Voting is ongoing in the rerun, which features a razor-thin margin between the NPP's Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh and the NDC's Ewurabena Aubynn. The current tally from 262 previously counted polling stations places the NPP ahead by just 48 votes making the rerun in the remaining 19 polling stations crucial.
The violence has sparked renewed concerns about the credibility of the process and the capacity of security agencies to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections in Ghana.
