Fiifi Kwetey Condemns Attack on Hawa Koomson, Says Violence ‘Absolutely Unacceptable’

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, has strongly condemned the violent incident involving former Fisheries Minister and ex-MP for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, during the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Speaking in reaction to the attack that took place at the Odorkor Methodist Church polling station, Mr. Kwetey described the act as “absolutely unacceptable,” regardless of political affiliation.

"Whichever way, whether NDC or NPP, it is absolutely unacceptable,” he stated firmly.

The chaos erupted when a group of unidentified thugs stormed the polling station, assaulting several individuals including Hawa Koomson and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie. Both women reportedly sustained physical injuries, prompting swift police intervention.

Fiifi Kwetey called for restraint and urged all political parties to uphold democratic values, stressing that violence has no place in Ghana’s electoral processes.

“We must all condemn this kind of political barbarism. Democracy thrives only in peace. No election should be a battlefield,” he added.

The rerun in Ablekuma North, covering 19 polling stations, was triggered by a dispute over results from the December 7, 2024 general elections. Tensions remain high in the constituency following the violent disruptions, with several political figures and civil society groups calling for justice and heightened security.
