ECOWAS President Calls for Stronger Global Support for Peace and Inclusive Development at UN Summit

The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, has called for predictable and sustained funding for African peace support operations, emphasizing that peace and stability are fundamental prerequisites for development.

Dr. Touray delivered the message during the first Biennial Summit for a Sustainable, Inclusive and Resilient Global Economy, held on 24 September 2025 on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Addressing world leaders and international partners, he underscored the critical role of regional economic communities in driving integration and growth across the African continent. He noted that efforts to build resilient economies must be anchored in strong institutions, domestic resource mobilisation, private sector participation, and innovative financing.

Dr. Touray further stressed that achieving sustainable and inclusive development requires global solidarity and partnerships that place people at the centre of international engagement.

Through his intervention, ECOWAS reaffirmed its dedication to advancing a people-focused global agenda and strengthening collaborations that support regional stability, economic transformation, and shared prosperity.
