Ministers from member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have convened in Abuja, Nigeria, to deliberate on the allocation of key leadership positions within the regional body for the 2026–2030 term.
The two-day meeting, held from 7 to 8 October 2025, brings together members of the ECOWAS Ad Hoc Ministerial Committee tasked with proposing the rotation of statutory appointments among member countries in accordance with established regional protocols.
Positions under consideration include the President and Vice-President of the ECOWAS Commission, Commissioners, Judges of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, the Auditor General, and the Directors General of the Intergovernmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) and the West African Health Organisation (WAHO).
In line with ECOWAS legal frameworks, statutory positions are allocated on a rotational basis among member states, ensuring equitable representation across executive institutions. Each mandate is non-renewable and spans a four-year term.
The committee’s proposals will be submitted to the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government for final approval during their upcoming summit in December.
Officials say the process is key to reinforcing regional cohesion and maintaining balance in leadership within the sub-regional organisation.
