Investigators have recovered the black box from the wreckage of an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that crashed into a residential area in Ahmedabad, India, killing at least 265 people on Thursday.
The London-bound passenger jet issued a mayday call shortly after takeoff and plummeted to the ground after reaching an altitude of just 100 metres. The crash, which occurred around lunchtime, resulted in widespread devastation both on board and on the ground.
Officials confirmed on Friday that the flight data recorder, commonly known as the black box, was retrieved and will be critical in determining the cause of the crash.
Emergency services continue recovery efforts at the site, while aviation authorities have launched a full investigation.
