Akua Afriyie Rejects EC’s Rerun Decision in Ablekuma North, Alleges NDC Influence

By Joylinda Laryea / July 3rd, 2025

Akua Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, has strongly rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to conduct a rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the constituency.

Speaking , Afriyie questioned the legitimacy and motivation behind the EC’s move, suggesting that it may have been influenced by undue pressure from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“We find this decision highly questionable and unacceptable. The will of the people was clearly expressed at the polls, and any attempt to override that must be scrutinized,” she said.

Afriyie further accused the EC of compromising its neutrality and independence, warning that such actions could erode public confidence in Ghana’s electoral system. “We will not sit idly by and allow politically motivated decisions to reverse the people’s mandate. This appears to be a calculated attempt by the NDC to manipulate the outcome,” she added.

Her remarks follow growing tensions in the constituency, where the initial results have been hotly contested. The NPP has vowed to resist any rerun and maintain that the original outcome reflects the true choice of the electorate.

The Electoral Commission has yet to officially respond to the allegations, as political stakeholders brace for further developments in the brewing electoral standoff.
