The Savannah Regional and West Gonja Municipal Offices of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) joined the regional launch of the “Tree for Life” initiative in Damongo on June 5, 2025, as part of efforts to support the nationwide tree-planting campaign declared by President John Dramani Mahama during the national launch in March.

The initiative, which aims to plant 30 million trees across Ghana during “Green Month” this June, was officially launched in the region by the Savannah Regional Minister, Mr. Salisu Bi-Awuribe. The event saw participation from key stakeholders, including NHIA Acting Regional Director Mr. Kasimu Abudulai, traditional and religious leaders, heads of departments, and security services.

In his address, Mr. Bi-Awuribe emphasized the importance of environmental protection, especially among the youth, and raised concerns about unregulated charcoal production in the region. He announced plans to work with District and Municipal Assemblies to draft by-laws to address the issue and called for more planting of indigenous species like shea trees.

The Regional Head of the Forestry Commission, Mr. Adomako Kwabea, highlighted the biblical link between creation and nature, underscoring the need for environmental care. Meanwhile, Mr. Abudulai of the NHIA pledged to ensure all trees planted around NHIA offices are well-maintained.

The ceremony concluded with a symbolic tree-planting exercise, marking the official beginning of the “Tree for Life” campaign in the Savannah Region.
