The Ghana Police Service has interdicted one of its officers following a viral video showing him assaulting a journalist during the parliamentary election rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.
In an official press statement released on July 11, 2025, and signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Richmond Mensah on behalf of the Director of Public Affairs, the Police Service confirmed immediate disciplinary action after reviewing the footage circulating widely on social media.
“The officer concerned has been withdrawn from the ongoing election duty at Ablekuma North; and in line with internal disciplinary procedures, he has been interdicted and referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation,” the statement read.
The incident took place at the Church of Pentecost, North Odorkor Polling Station 2, where the journalist from GHOne TV was reportedly attacked while covering the election process. The attack sparked public outrage and renewed discussions on media freedom and the conduct of police personnel during elections.
The Police Service has assured the public that a comprehensive and impartial investigation will be conducted and promised to provide updates as the inquiry progresses. The statement also urged the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
This action by the Ghana Police Service comes amid increasing calls for the protection of journalists and the enforcement of accountability within security agencies during sensitive democratic exercises.
