EC Awaits Police Protection to Declare Ablekuma North Results - Bossman Asare Tells Parliament

By Joylinda Laryea/ June 19, 2025

Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Bossman Asare, has revealed that the Commission is yet to declare the Ablekuma North parliamentary results from the 2024 general elections due to the absence of adequate police protection.

Addressing Parliament during a briefing on the conduct of the 2024 polls, Dr. Asare stated that the delay in the declaration was necessary to ensure the safety of EC officials and the integrity of the process.

“We are waiting for police protection to declare the Ablekuma North parliamentary results,” he told lawmakers, adding that tensions in the constituency had created a volatile environment that required security reinforcement before proceeding with the official announcement.

The revelation has sparked concern among Members of Parliament, with several calling for urgent intervention by the Interior Ministry and the Ghana Police Service to provide the needed protection and restore public confidence in the electoral process.

Dr. Asare assured the House that once the police provide the necessary support, the EC will immediately proceed with the declaration in accordance with the law.

The 2024 general elections have been largely peaceful, but isolated incidents of unrest in some constituencies including Ablekuma North have raised questions about the preparedness of security agencies to manage electoral hotspots.

The Electoral Commission has reiterated its commitment to transparency and has called on all stakeholders, including political parties and their supporters, to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
