Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed profound gratitude to more than 60 Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have officially declared their support for his candidacy ahead of the party’s 2026 presidential primaries.
Speaking after a courtesy call paid by the MPs, Dr. Bawumia described the moment as heartwarming and a strong signal of unity within the party.
“Members of Parliament control the constituencies to a large extent, so I thank the over 60 MPs for their strong show of support,” he said. “This was a courtesy call to declare support for me. I am very happy.”
The endorsement, which comes from a significant portion of the party’s parliamentary caucus, is seen by political analysts as a major boost to Dr. Bawumia’s prospects as he eyes the party’s flagbearership once again.
Dr. Bawumia, who led the NPP in the 2024 general election, is widely considered one of the frontrunners in the race for 2026. His renewed bid is expected to focus on building on his previous agenda of digital transformation, economic reforms, and national development.
The MPs, in their address, praised Dr. Bawumia’s leadership qualities, vision for the country, and his ability to unify the party across various factions and regions.
The NPP is gearing up for an intense internal contest, and this early wave of support could set the tone for what may become a defining race for the party’s future.
