Ablekuma North Rerun: NPP’s Amfo Sefa Warns of Retaliation in Akwatia, Calls for ‘Preparedness’ After Violent Attacks

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 parliamentary candidate for Tema West, Dennis Amfo Sefa, has issued a chilling warning in response to violent attacks during the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency on Friday, July 11, 2025.

In an interview, Amfo Sefa condemned the assault on NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station, where a group of unidentified macho men disrupted voting and physically attacked party officials and agents.

“This is a sad and dangerous precedent that is being set by the NDC,” he stated, accusing the governing party of employing violence to tilt electoral outcomes in its favour.

He added: “We are telling our boys and men: get ready, arm yourselves, and prepare for Akwatia. We will meet there and repeat the same thing that they [the NDC] have done in Ablekuma North.”

The remark has sparked public concern, with critics warning that it could further escalate political tensions ahead of future by-elections.

When pressed by journalist Hanson Agyemang about the NPP’s involvement in the 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence, Amfo Sefa appeared unapologetic, replying, “Is that to say we should continue? If that is what you are saying, then it means we should prepare for Akwatia.”

The rerun in Ablekuma North was held in 19 polling stations following a seven-month electoral dispute from the December 2024 general elections. Though the NPP officially boycotted the process, its candidate defied the directive and contested, resulting in high political tensions and security concerns.

Observers, including civil society groups and election monitoring organizations, are now calling for calm and urging political leaders to refrain from inciteful rhetoric that could undermine the country’s fragile democratic gains.
