Tempers flared in Parliament on Thursday as Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, strongly criticized the Electoral Commission (EC) for failing to formally report security threats that have delayed the declaration of parliamentary results in some constituencies, particularly Ablekuma North.
His outburst came during a briefing by Deputy Electoral Commissioner Dr. Bossman Asare, who told the House that the EC was still waiting for police protection before announcing the results for the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat.
“He is wrong!” Dr. Apaak exclaimed, visibly displeased. “The Commission ought to have filed a formal complaint to the Police! This House cannot accept such a casual excuse in a matter of national importance.”
Dr. Apaak argued that the EC’s responsibility to ensure a credible and transparent electoral process includes promptly alerting security agencies through official channels when its operations are hindered by threats or instability.
Several other MPs joined the debate, with some demanding clarity on the EC’s communication with the Ghana Police Service regarding the alleged security concerns. Others called for swift action to ensure the declaration of all outstanding results to protect the integrity of the electoral process.
The EC has come under increasing scrutiny following its report on the 2024 general elections, which, although largely peaceful, witnessed isolated incidents of tension in constituencies like Ablekuma North.
The Speaker of Parliament urged calm and asked the EC to provide detailed documentation on all security-related issues affecting the electoral process for further examination by the appropriate parliamentary committee.
