In a groundbreaking medical achieveJment, researchers at Juntendo University in Tokyo have developed the world’s first fully functional artificial womb, marking a major advancement in the field of ectogenesis ,the process of gestating embryos entirely outside the human body.
The innovation, referred to as a “biobag,” mimics the conditions of a natural uterus. This transparent artificial amniotic sac has been successfully used to grow goat embryos, providing oxygen, nutrients, and waste removal systems crucial for fetal development.
Scientists report that the biobag maintains stable gestation-like conditions without the need for a living womb, potentially revolutionizing neonatal care and fertility medicine. The breakthrough could one day support the survival of extremely premature human babies or open new ethical debates surrounding artificial reproduction.
The achievement is now being hailed globally as a monumental step in reproductive science.
