Police, others arrested for robbery

Two armed robbers who were nabbed by residents at Esaase-Manhyia near Ahwerewa escaped death as the police intervened when residents tried to lynch them.

According to reports, one of the two suspects who were rescued by the police was a policeman with No. 46778 G/L/Cpl Evans Ahenkan of Court Unit, Kumasi and in uniform.

The other suspect, whose name was given as Abdallah could not talk as a result of severe injuries meted out to him.

Eye witness account indicates that the suspects who were three in number went to a mining site, stopped a pickup vehicle on the way from the site and robbed the miners of their black sand.

It was then that the youth who saw the incident, rushed on the suspects and arrested two, while the third person managed to escape into the bush.

Meanwhile, suspect Abdallah was reportedly taken to Nkawie-Toase Government Hospital where he was referred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for treatment.

D/Inspr Stephen Yeboah of Div CID, Nkawie i/c case, who confirmed the incident said,” on 26/08/19 about 1000hours, police Nkawie received a distress call to the effect that, some armed robbers have been arrested at Esaase-Manhyia near Ahwerewa and the youth were about to lynch them.”

He confirmed that,”A team of police personnel rushed to the place and rescued suspects No. 46778 G/L/Cpl Evans Ahenkan of Court Unit, Kumasi in uniform and one other whose name was given as Abdalla as he could not talk as a result of severe injuries meted out to him. According to the youth of the town, the suspects who were three in number came to a mining site, stopped a pickup vehicle on the way from the site.”

Inspr Stephen Yeboah also said suspect L/Cpl Evans Ahenkan has been detained for investigations.

However, he stated that, “One Karim Awudu aged 41 who came to the station and claimed ownership of the mining site, could not produce any valid mining documents. Thus, he was also detained for mining without authority.”
