Newly Sekondi NDC Parliamentary Candidate To Win In 2020

Newly Sekondi NDC Parliamentary Candidate To Win In 2020

Western Region Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Japhet Baidoo says Charles Hagan’s election as the party’s Parliamentary Candidate (PC) for the Sekondi Constituency is a clear indication of the people’s disappointment in the elites who have previously represented the constituency in Parliament.

Charles Hagan, popularly known as ”Panya”, polled 244 votes representing 41.9% out of 582 votes cast to emerge as the party’s Parliamentary candidate in Saturday’s primaries.

Speaking in an interview monitored by bestnewsghana.com , Japhet Baidoo said Panya’s victory means the people are willing to try a candidate of a different background.

”The good people of Sekondi have tried professionals, the so called educated elites. For decades they have tried this and have nothing to show for it. It is important to have people with clout who can advance the constituency’s cause but what good is it if all of that cannot reflect in the development of Sekondi,” he asked.

Japhet added that Charles Hagan understands the needs of the people and has the capacity to deliver same.

”In choosing Charles Hagan, our delegates have communicated the general thinking of the entire constituency. The thought process has changed and Panya represents someone who identifies with them, understands them and will actually work towards the growth of Sekondi and not only profess it by word of mouth,” he concluded.

Charles Hagan is the latest NDC candidate to attempt to win back a seat the NPP has held since 1996.

The NPP’s take

Reacting to thius development, the Western Region Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Abdul Ganiyu Mohammed is confident the people of Sekondi will not change their voting pattern in next year’s presidential and parliamentary elections.

Abdul Ganiyu says the people will not change their pattern because Charles Hagan does not fit the ‘class’ of persons the people of Sekondi consider capable of representing their interest.

”The people of Sekondi by their voting pattern, have communicated what they look out for in a parliamentary committee. They want someone with clout who can lobby and advance the cause of the constituency in parliament. Without this, a candidate cannot claim to be capable of properly representing the people,” he said.

Abdul Ganiyu also expressed faith that whoever the party settles on will defeat the NDC’s Charles Hagan.

”I am convinced that the NDC’s candidate does not have these capabilities and will be no match for whoever our party settles on as the parliamentary candidate. Over the years, our party has produced members of parliament who have demonstrated impressive lobbying skills and a capacity to influence the discourse in favour of the constituency and this much clear enough for all to see.” He concluded.

The NPP is yet to choose a parliamentary candidate for the December 7, 2020 elections but has Hon. Andrew Egyapa Mercer as the Member of Parliament for the constituency.
